Pilgrim's Progress

Join us for the Pilgrim's Progress, a captivating Canterbury Trails walk tracing an ancient, historic route from Chilham back to Canterbury. Our journey begins at Canterbury West rail station. From here, we will catch a train together to our starting point in Chilham. The guided walk itself is completely free to attend, though clients are responsible for purchasing their own train fares. Exploring Chilham Upon arrival, we will first spend some time taking in the picturesque, medieval charm of Chilham village before setting out on foot. Leaving the village behind, we will join the historic Pilgrims' Way. This extraordinarily scenic route takes us high above the magnificent Stour Valley, offering panoramic views as we ramble through traditional Kentish fruit farms and tranquil, ancient woodland. As we draw closer to our final destination, the trail guides us past a fascinating Iron Age hill fort and the renowned holy well in the village of Harbledown. Following in the footsteps of centuries of travellers, our magnificent walk finally concludes as we descend into the historic heart of Canterbury. Ready to step back in time? Stour Valley Trail

Join us on a FREE picturesque 13km Canterbury Trails walking adventure, tracing the scenic route from Grove Ferry back to the historic heart of Canterbury. Our journey begins at the iconic Buttermarket. From there, we will walk together to the Canterbury Bus Station to catch public transport out to our starting point in Upstreet. Please note that the bus fare is not included and must be covered at the client’s own expense (payable in £). Alighting in Upstreet, our walk officially commences via Grove Ferry as we join the renowned Stour Valley Walk. Our first major highlight is the incredibly pretty village of Stodmarsh. Here, we will take time to admire its tiny but beautiful historic church and soak in the charm of a truly traditional English pub. Leaving Stodmarsh behind, the trail winds its way through spectacular rolling countryside before descending into a lush, wooded valley. This scenic path leads us directly to Fordwich, famous for holding the title of England’s smallest town. We will make our second scheduled stop here, giving you ample time to explore its quaint town hall, historic church, and perhaps visit the local village pub. Following a well-earned rest in Fordwich, we will embark on the final leg of our trek, walking the remaining distance back to Canterbury. Our memorable 13km journey officially concludes in the bustling city centre, leaving you perfectly placed to enjoy the rest of your day.

Our terms and conditions

Introduction
On a Canterbury Trails guided walk you will be accompanied at all times by experienced volunteer walking guides. Our guided walks are relaxed activities, but you are expected to follow instructions and be guided for your safety and for the safety of others in the group. 


Risk assessment

Our walks are risk  assessed and a copy of the risk assessment is available upon request. One guide will be a qualified First Aider and will carry a first aid kit and is trained in emergency procedures. We hold public liability insurance and a copy of our insurance policy and certificate is available on request.


Age restrictions
There is no lower age limit on our coast and countryside walks, however all children and young people under the age of 16, must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For our guided walks, all children and young people must be accompanied by a responsible adult. It is not our intention to restrict any children and young people from our guided walks, so we do ask parents to be aware of their children’s capabilities, stamina and ability if we are going to be walking for longer distances.


Booking a walk
Please look at the booking page for information about how to book your walk. Some of our walks require the use of public transport, which you will pay for directly. Example charges include £2.00 for a single bus journey, or up to £12.00 for a return train fare (excluding railcards).


Donations
Our walks are free of charge and if you enjoy yourself, please feel free to review us on social media. If guests do wish to leave a donation, this be used to cover the costs of our website, marketing and operational expenses. Canterbury Trails staff are volunteers and do not take payment for their services 🙂


Cancellations
If your walk is cancelled by us due to forces beyond our control, we will do our best to offer you the same walk when avialable on our calendar of events.  Please note, in certain circumstances, such poor, deteriorating or dangerous weather conditions or unforeseen illness of a member of the group, as it may be necessary to abandon a walk.


On the day of your walk
On the day of your walk, we ensure that you are met at a pre-arranged starting point. Please ensure you are prepared in line with our recommended clothing and equipment guide. We ask that you complete a registration form at the start of the walk and if you have a pre-existing medical condition that you believe may affect you when we are on the guided walk, then it is helpful if you can disclose that on the form.


Dogs
We allow dogs on our walks, but we must be told in advance if you intend to bring a dog with you. Dogs must be on a lead and under close control at all times. We reserve the right to change routes if we encounter livestock to ensure the safety of the whole group.


The Countryside Code
The code is written to advise you and landowners of yours and their responsibilities when out and about in the countryside. We do ask that you do not leave any litter, food waste or other unwanted materials in the countryside and take everything back with you for disposal at home. Please follow the Countryside Code at all times.

What attire and equipment should you bring?

Our walks are between 3 and 6 hours. The following list is our recommendations for what you need to bring to enjoy your ramble.

  • Day rucksack  
  • Drink bottle – 1 to 2 litre
  • Hiking boots or hiking shoes with good ankle support and grip, or other sturdy footwear
  • Wind and water-proof jacket with hood – wear or pack depending on the weather
  • Long cotton trousers - to protect against bramble and nettle stings
  • Sun hat or warm woolly hat – pack one and wear the other
  • Sunglasses – wear or pack
  • Walking poles (optional)
  • Woollen socks
  • Packed lunch and snacks – pack more than you think you'll need
  • Fully charged mobile phone ­– and charger
  • Personal medication, eg antihistamines, asthma medication

Conditions can change so be prepared with:

  • Long sleeved top in wool or  fleece – wear or pack depending on the weather
  • Gloves 
  • Waterproof overtrousers
